How to Copy and Paste With the iPhone® and iPad®

The copy and paste function on any device is an essential tool that many of us use daily. Incredibly, however, copy/paste wasn't included on the iPad or the iPhone for the first two years.

Thankfully, Apple® has enabled this feature ever since IOS® 3 and has even gone one step further. Not only can you copy and paste traditionally, but you can also copy on one device and paste it onto another. This means that if you have some text or an image on your iPad that you'd like on your iPhone, you can copy and paste it to and from your devices instantly. Here's how:

How to Perform a Standard Copy and Paste

Copy and paste on Apple devices is very simple. All you do is hold your finger over the image or text you need. A couple of things will then happen:

  • If you are selecting the text, it becomes highlighted. You can then increase or decrease the highlighted area until you have selected exactly what you want to copy.
  • A pop-up will appear, inviting you to either "copy," "look up," or "share."
  • If you select an image, a range of options will appear, including "copy."

Once you tap your finger on "copy," you will then be able to paste wherever you need to on the same device. Simply hold your finger down in the space where you would like to paste, and the option will appear. Select "paste," and your text or image will appear.

How to Copy and Paste Across Different Devices

Before we cover this, it's worth noting that this feature doesn't work on devices older than the iPhone 5 and 4th generation iPads.

To begin, you need to ensure that "Handoff®" mode is on. To do this, you need to:

  • Turn on both WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Ensure you're signed in to the same iCloud® account on both devices
  • Open the settings
  • Select "General"
  • Tap "Handoff" and switch it on

The process is the same for both iPad and iPhone devices. You must also make sure the Handoff feature is switched on for the two devices that you want to copy and paste from.

Now, whatever you copy on one device, you will instantly be able to paste on the other device. Whether it's iPhone to iPad, or vice-versa, copy your text or image in the usual way, then switch to your other device and select "paste," and then the content will magically appear!

One important thing to note is that your copied content won't remain on the clipboard for long, so ensure you copy/paste reasonably quickly. If you find that your content won't paste, go back to the other device, and copy it again, then immediately select "paste" on the other device, and you'll find it should work.

If you have multiple Apple devices, then this is a neat little trick to save you time and effort. Try it out and see what you think.
