The Best-Selling Smartphones of All Time
Believe it or not, the historically best-selling mobile phones of all time are the Nokia® 1100 and 1110, reaching back to the early 2000s. Of course, since smartphones came onto the market, they have overtaken any kind of flip or slider phone sales on an annual basis. While the Nokia phones are still holding steady as the best sellers overall, data from later years makes it clear that smartphones are high sellers.
Apple® iPhone® 6 and 6 Plus
The Apple iPhone 6 and 6 plus, both released in 2014, are the best-selling touchscreen phones. These are the eighth generation of the iPhone and came out at the same time in September 2014. They have sold over 220 million units worldwide.
When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were first made available, over four million pre-orders were made. This exceeded the available supply, and 10 million devices were then sold in the first three days. Each of these scenarios set records for Apple.
The Nokia 5230 smartphone was released in 2009 and is next on the list of bestselling touchscreen phones. This phone model has sold more than 150 million units even though it does not have wifi support. It was particularly popular in developing countries.
Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
Further down the list as the third best-selling touchscreen phones are the Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Released in 2017, this 11th generation of the iPhone sold 86.3 million units. Sales were initially slower for these phones, with many waiting for the iPhone X to be released later in the year.
Samsung® Galaxy® S4
Right below the Apple iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the Samsung Galaxy S4, coming in as the fourth best-selling touchscreen phone. This smartphone was first released in April 2013, to much fanfare. Samsung shipped 20 million units by the end of that June, and ended up selling 40 million units in the first six months post-release. Known as the company’s fastest selling smartphone and the fastest selling AndroidTM phone of all time, sales ultimately hit 80 million units.
Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
Yet another Apple device makes the list of best-selling smartphones. Next, there is the Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the tenth generation of the iPhone. These phones, overall, moved 78.3 million units.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were first announced in September 2016 and released shortly after. While the company did not give pre-order sales numbers, T-Mobile® said the phone shattered all previous pre-order records. It also broke preregistration records at T-Mobile.
Apple iPhone XR
The twelfth generation of the iPhone comes right after the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in terms of units sold. It was the best-selling smartphone globally in 2019, and comes in at 77.4 million units sold overall. This smartphone outsold the more expensive iPhone XS and XS Max.
