How to Protect Your Smartphone While on Vacation

Jun 25th 2019

The summer months are a great time to go on awesome adventures traveling to places near and far. But while you’re enjoying the people, places and things that are a few towns, states or a world away, you have to make sure you stay protected. You wear a nice hat, sunglasses and, of course, sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. You stay aware of your surroundings to protect yourself from thieves and vandals. And, you call home to make sure your family and friends know you’re safe. But in addition to protecting yourself, you might need to protect you greatest traveling companion: your phone.

Every year thousands of smartphones are lost, stolen or damaged while people are on vacation. Not to mention having their private information stolen via free Wi-Fi networks. Luckily, we’ve got a list (and a few helpful links) to help ensure that your device is protected from the weather, hackers, thieves and a little absent mindedness.

Get a screen protector

First, if you haven’t purchased a screen protector for your phone, make that a priority. There’s nothing like dropping your phone and seeing a cracked screen to take the wind out of your sails. Look for a screen protector made from tempered glass. This will not only help prevent scratches, but also absorb the impact if you drop your device.

Get a case

A phone without a case is a disaster waiting to happen. The danger increases if you’re going to the beach or any place where the weather or elements can affect your device. There are great options on the market that will increase the sturdiness of your phone, like Life ProofTM or TakTik TM.

Get a VPN

One of the biggest dangers to travelers is having their private information or identity stolen from using open Wi-Fi networks. This includes using Wi-Fi at the airport, at your hotel, a restaurant or even a tourist location. A VPN can minimize the danger by encrypting your data, making it harder for hackers to access your private information. Bonus: if you’re in a country where certain websites are restricted, you can change your IP address in your VPN to still access your favorite sites. There are several options available online like Hotspot Shield or TunnelBear.

Get a tracking app

In case your phone gets stolen, a tracking device will help you not only track your phone, but shut it down. That way, thieves won’t be able to access your device and steal your private information. There are a few different free apps on the market, such as AVG Antivirus or Pocket Geek®. They both have free and paid versions that provide several helpful tools to not only protect your phone, but help you get the most out of your device.

Get a backup device

A spare phone can save a lot of stress and frustration while vacationing. If something happens to your phone while away from home, you won’t have to worry about the cost of getting it repaired or replaced.
